Answer:

The poet vents his dejection and despair in the numbering poverty of the life of the slum children in the poem. These children are 'rootless' as they lack stability in their lives. They are insecure and illfeed, living a miserable life of pain and despair. The sour cream colour of their school walls reflects the despondent look of these students. They lack the usual exuberance of life. Education has shown them the path of liberation but they are ironically caught in a situation where their education only makes them aware of their miserly existence.

Answer:

"an elementary school classroom in a slum"-In this poem the poet shows his dejection in the poverty of the life of the slum children.

Explanation:

  • In this poem the poet means them as slum children because he felt they are rootless.he felt that they lack their stability of lives.they are very ill fed, poor living a cruel and miserable life of pain and despair.
  • their school walls were sour cream coloured which reflects their despondent looks. He felt that they( those students) lacks the excitement and the magical things that life brings.
  • they suffered a lot in their their slum world.being awaited to seek a newer world.they have a thirst of hunger to get off from these slums to seek a lot of new things which they thought to change their slum world.
  • they world is far away from the reality which means the actual world which is full of school books, education and knowledge which they thought to be far away from them.
  • They want themselves to be educated because they thought that the education is the only thing which helps them to move out of their slum world. It (education) is the only thing that has shown them the path of liberation, and is the only thing which gives a reason to their merely existence
