After Blenheim was written by Robert Southey in 1796. It refers to the Battle of Blenheim which took place in 1704. It is an anti-war poem written by a English Romantic poet laureate. Small children find a skull and ask their grandfather about it in the poem. He tells them about the unhappy consequences of the war. At the same time he says that it was a great victory.
Robert Southey wrote this poem during the Jacobin years, 1790 - 1800. He was not in favour of the battle and refused to look at the palace named for the battle. But by 1820 his views changed and he regarded the battle as the greatest victory of the British.
