First the reader gets to know that a white woman was killed by her black servant. Everybody, her husband, the police, the neighbours, see it as a crime committed by a inferior black who had planed a theft. This was the beginning and now the story is told.
Mary, the daughter of a alcoholic, leaves her family and works as a secretary in a town far away from home. First she is satisfied with her monotonous way of life. In her naivity, repressing and blindness she does not realize that she is going to be an old maid. Shocked by the comments of her friends, she searches for a husband reluctantly. She thinks she has found a partner in the farmer Richard Turner because she hopes that it is not so important for him. First RT is grateful that he found a wife at his lonely farm but soon he realizes that Mary cannot cope with life on the farm. She has three problems: the heat, the water and the natives. She also makes enemies of her neighbours because of her pride and she learns that RT is not good for farming and that he will never pay back his dept.
The change in the story is when RT got the new servant Moses. Once Mary hit him with her whip and since that she is afraid of him. When RT tells her that Moses will go, Mary begs him to stay. Moses stays realizing that he is superior to her.
Meanwhile Mary becomes increasingly apathetic. Once RT sees that Moses addresses Mary which is not common and he gets furious and chases him away. First Mary supports him but then she realizes that Moses will take revenge and really she is killed by Moses on the last day on the farm.
