R K Narayan uses two contrasting characters Muni and the American to show the cultural clash. Muni is an uneducated man from rural background who accepts his fate. American is a wealthy and educatedan who believes in action to change destiny. The humourous part of the story is the conversation between these two where nobody understands even a word of what the other person is speaking. Both are confused in their own way. The incident where the American returns his plane ticket to take the horse on a ship is funny and annoying.
