The British government decided to grant some political rights to the Indians because it wanted to secure the cooperation and support of the Indians for their war efforts in World War II.

The Cripps Mission was sent to India in 1942. It promised to grant full self-government to the Indians after the war if they supported the British war effort. According to it India would be given a dominion status and elections would be held after the war.

But the Indian leaders rejected the proposals and started the Quit India movement. They refused to cooperate in the war effort and demanded immediate British withdrawal from India.
