No, not in practical, academic or aspirational terms. The leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, is the most left wing leader the party has had ever. He’s a social democrat with some views that are outside the normal run of social democratic discourse. Communists are an altogether different kettle of fish. They’re Marxists and believe the only way to change society for the better is violent revolution leading to a Socialist State. They all agree on that, it’s what happens after that’s open to discussion. Social Democrats believe in the democratic process. It is a fundamental precept of democratic socialism that the way forward is persuasion and victory through the ballot box. Although what happens after that is open to debate too, but complete removal of the market economy and replacing it with a centralised, demand led economy isn’t even remotely on the Labour Party’s agenda.
