Brutus says that Caesar was an ambitious man and he would let Caesar to rule Rome as a monarchy. He wanted Rome to be a democracy and for that he  would slay anyone standing in his way. He said that he was ready to lay his life down for Rome. Well actually this is ill founded as Caesar turned down the throne thrice when Antony tried to crown him as king, but Brutus was blinded by Cassius's words.
