bryophytes and pteridophyted produce a large number of male gametes but relatively veru few female gametes. why?

Bryophytes & pteridophytes require water as a medium of reproduction. Egg or the female gametophyte remains intact within the mother plant . Male gametes have to be released into water , swim along with the help of water droplets and reach the female gamete to fertilize it.
Male gametes are susceptible to many dangers during the travel to reach female gamete . Hence, they are produced in large numbers by Bryophytes & Pteridophytes
