The correct answer is - Buchholz relay is used as a protective device which is sensitive to the adverse effects in case of a dielectric failure inside an equipment.

In a transformer, the Buchholz relay is an oil container which that houses the connecting pipe from the main tank to conservator tank. The most important parts of the Buchholz relay are the baffle plate, the mercury switch, and the gas release pockets.

The principle of the Buchholz relay is that w
henever there is an internal fault in the transformer, the insulating oil in the transformer will decompose to form different hydrocarbon gases, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The gases will accumulate in the Buchholz container causing a fall in the oil level. When the accumulated gases are collected from the gas release pockets, they can be analyzed to predict the type of fault in the transformer.

The different types of faults can be insulation faults in between the turns, break down of the core, core heating, etc.
