In Tibetan Buddhism Guru Padmasambhava is
the most prominent figure perhaps more important than
the Sakyamun or the Buddha. Padmasambhava who
was more than a saintly recluse or a learned theologian
is said to have been a most powerful exorcist, magician
and a wonder worker, perfectly versed in all aspects of
tantri Budidhism. Padmasambhava's great achievement
lies in laying the foundation of Lamaism in Tibet at a
time when Tibetan religion was dominated by 'Bon the
primitive religion, the doctrine of which is impregnated
with animism, shamanism and demonolatry. Although
the definition of Bonism is rejected by modern followers
of Bon, most of the scholars who made a study of
Tibetan Buddhism in the 8" century, are much critical
