Bullet fired against a glass window pane makes a hole in it without cracking it. But on the other hand when a stone strikes on the glass plane, it gets smashed. why is it so?.

The reason here is due to momentum. The time of contact is at minimum when a bullet hits the glass. .

The velocity is great, which is shared by the glass, making a hole through it, rest of the glass remains at rest due to inertia of the rest.

A stone on the other hand has enough contact time when it strikes with low velocity.

Therefore, the velocity spreads, shattering the pane.

As we know that, Velocity of the Bullets is more than the Velocity of Stone.

Initially, the entire glass is in a state of rest.

When a bullet strikes the glass pane the part of the glass pane which comes in contact with the bullet immediately share the large velocity of the bullet and flies away making a hole.

The remaining part of the glass, due to inertia of rest remains at rest and is not cracked.
