BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS

Burning of fossil fuels leads to ocean acidification, global warming pollution and air pollution.

When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we don’t just meet our energy needs—we drive the current global warming crisis as well. Fossil fuels produce large quantities of carbon dioxide when burned. Carbon emissions trap heat in the atmosphere and lead to climate change. Eventually, it leads to global warming.

When we burn oil, coal, and gas, we change the ocean’s basic chemistry, making it more acidic. Our seas absorb as much as a quarter of all man-made carbon emissions. Since the start of the Industrial Revolution (and our coal-burning ways), the ocean has become 30 percent more acidic. As the acidity in our waters goes up, the amount of calcium carbonate—a substance used by oysters, lobsters, and countless other marine organisms to form shells—goes down. This can slow growth rates, weaken shells, and imperil entire food chains.Ocean acidification impacts coastal communities as well.

Fossil fuels emit more than just carbon dioxide when burned. Coal-fired power plants single handedly generate 42 percent of dangerous mercury emissions as well as sulphur dioxide emissions and the vast majority of soot into the air. Meanwhile, fossil fuel–powered cars, trucks, and boats are the main contributors of poisonous carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which produces smog (and respiratory illnesses) on hot days.

Fossils fuels are combustible substances formed from the dead remains of the animals and plants which were buried deep under the surface of the earth over millions of years are called fossil energy sources or fossil fuels.

EXAMPLES: Coal, petroleum and natural gas.

BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS:-

1)Causes air pollution: Burning of these fuels give rise to smoke, which pollutes our environment . The air pollution is harmful to human beings, animals and plants.

2)Production of harmful gases: Burning of fossil fuels give rise to harmful gases like carbon-dioxide, carbon-monoxide, sulphur-dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

3)Causes acid rain: Gases produced during burning react with water vapours in air.

EXAMPLE: Co2+H2o gives carbonic acid

Acid rain decreases fertility of soil, destroys forests, makes adverse effect on the buildings and human beings and pollute water resources.

4)Produces less heat: Burning of fossil fuels do not produce much heat. Therefore, large quantity of fossil fuel is burnt to produce large amount of heat.

5) Causes global warming: Burning of fossils leads to global warming. Global warming may disturb the eco-system.
