Sadao had helped the prisoner escape and had asked him to signal him if he needed food or signal him if he was on the island but okay. When he looked at the island, there was no flash. That meant the prisoner had escaped safely from the island and that was the reward for sadao.

Sadao’s reward the successful return of the POW, Tom back to safety through a Korean boat. Sadao had helped an American POW that had mistakenly landed in Japan. He had been badly injured when he washed ashore one evening near his home. He and Hana, his wife were reluctant to save him as he was their enemy.

However, being conscientious and kindhearted human beings, they helped him. They had to face lots of opposition from their servants. The fear of being caught, compelled Sadao to confide this secret to the General, who promised to have the POW disposed of. However, since he was not well, he forgot his promise. Meanwhile Sadao arranged for the POW’s escape. He sent him to a nearby island that was uninhabited with certain instructions and provisions.

The POW was to signal his presence through a flash of the torch at the time of setting sun as long as he was at the island. One day, Sadao did not see the signal. It meant the POW had gone from there. This was Sadao’s reward.
