a) Her refers to the mother seagull. "He" refers to the seagull in the story "First Flight".

b. She wanted to have her son come and fetch the food from her. Only then will he learn how to fly.

c. The seagull was quite perplexed as to why his mother wouldn't come nearer. Hence he was surprised.

d. He was so hunrgy and hence he took off, attempting to catch the piece of fish. Hence he managed to take his first flight.
