We use two reactions to prepare propan-1-amine .

First we convert butane nitrile to butanamide by partial hydrolysis of butane nitrile.

CH3–CH2-CH2-CN ————— > CH3-CH2-CH2-CONH2.

This reaction is carried in presence of HCl at 40 degrees centigrade.

Then we convert the butanamide to propan-1-amine by Hoffmann bromamide degradation

CH3–CH2-CH2-CONH2 + Br2+4 NaOH →

CH3–CH2-CH2-NH2 + 2Na2CO3+2NaBr+2H2O
