mix iron and sulfur in any ratio now bring a magnet towards it,you will notice that you can separate them through physical methods.now heat 20 grams of iron powder and 8 grams of sulfur.you will notice that 6 grams of the mixture is left over.now take 14 grams of iron and 8 grams of sulfur.you will notice that there are no remainings this proves that a compound has different properties compared to its constituents(sulfur and iron) and the constituents are always in a fixed ratio(14:8 or 7:4) in the following example.
