Matter can exist in one of three main states: solid, liquid, or gas.
Solid matters are rigid and have definite shape and volume, intermolecular distances are very small. example : wood, ice, diamond ,etc.
Liquid matters will be loosely packed particles. They have definite volume but not definite shape ,they take the shape of the container in which they are stored, intermolecular distances are large than compared to the solids. example: water, Mercury (at Room temperature) , oil , paint.,etc.
Gaseous matters are particles packed so loosely that it has neither a defined shape nor a defined volume. A gas can be compressed., intermolecular distances are very large example : when water gets converted due to heat it becomes vapours , the air v breathe in O2(oxygen), etc.
I hope this will help you

Answer:
Solid is the state in which matter maintains a fixed volume and shape; liquid is the state in which matter adapts to the shape of its container but varies only slightly in volume; and gas is the state in which matter expands to occupy the volume and shape of its container.
