Solution :-

It's given that a shopkeeper suffers a loss which is equal to the SP of 5 pens. And we have to find the loss percentage.

  • SP of 5 pens = 5x
  • Let the SP of a pen be x
  • So, the SP of 40 pens be 40x

We also know that the loss was equal to SP of 5 pens = 5x

Loss = CP - SP

=>5x = CP - 40x

=> CP = 40x + 5x

=> CP = 45x

We also know that,

Loss% = ( loss/CP ) × 100

=> loss% = ( 5x/45x ) × 100

=> loss% = 1/9 × 100

=> loss% = 100/9

=> loss% = 9 1/9

Therefore, the loss percentage of the shopkeeper iz 9 1/9.

Answer:

Let the selling price of 1 pen = 1 rupee.

Given that there are 40 pens.

Then the selling price of 40 pens = 40 rupees.

Given that he suffers a loss = 5 pens.

We know that Loss = CP - SP

                          5 = CP - 40

                          CP = 40 + 5

                          CP = 45.

We know that Loss% = Loss/CP * 100

                                    = 4/45 * 100

                                    = 8.88%.
