Given:

By selling 5 bananas a rupees a man lost 20%.

If he had 12 dozen bananas with him

To find:

What was the c.p.and s.p. of the bananas?

Solution:

S.P. of 5 bananas = Re. 1

So, S.P. of 1 banana = Rs. \frac{1}{5}

∴ C.P. of 1 banana is,

=  \frac{100}{100 - Loss\%} \times S.P.

= \frac{100}{100 - 20} \times \frac{1}{5}

= \frac{100}{80} \times \frac{1}{5}

= \frac{1}{4}

We know,

\boxed{\bold{1 \:dozen = 12\: bananas}}

∴ 12 dozen bananas = 12 × 12 = 144 bananas

Now,

C.P. of 144 bananas = C.P. of 1 banana × 144 = \frac{1}{4} \times 144 = Rs. \: 36

and

S.P. of 144 bananas = S.P. of 1 banana × 144 = \frac{1}{5} \times 144 = Rs. \: 28.8

Thus, the C.P. of the bananas is Rs. 36 and the S.P. of the bananas is Rs. 28.8.
