The amount paid for the AC is Rs 22500.

Solution

Selling price of AC (SP) = Rs 18000

Loss percentage = 20%

Cost price (CP) = [100 / (100 – Loss %)] * SP

                         = [ 100/ (100 - 20)] * 18000

                         = [ 100/ (80) ] * 18000

                         = 1.25 * 18000

                         = 22500

Therefore the cost price of the AC is Rs 22,500.

selling price of A.C = 18,000 Rs.

a/c to question,

I lose 20% by selling on it.

so, selling price = C.P - 20% of C.P

18,000 = C.P - 20 × C.P/100

or, 18,000 = C.P - 0.2 C.P

or, 18,000 = 0.8 C.P

or, C.P = 18,000/0.8

hence, C.P = 22,500 Rs.

hence, I paid 22,500 Rs for it.
