The article needs to be sold at Rs.600 in order to double the profit.

Given :

Selling price of the article at 12.5% profit = Rs. 540

To Find :

The selling price of the article for double the profit

Solution :

Let the actual price i.e. Cost Price of the article be X.

Profit made on article = 12.5% of X

Selling Price at 12.5% profit = X + 12.5% of X

                                     540 = X + (12.5X)/100

                                     540 = (100+12.5)X/100

                                     540 = 112.5X/100

                                       X = (540*100)/112.5

                                       X = 54000/112.5

                                       X = 480

Thus, the actual price of the article is Rs. 480.

Selling at double profit i.e. 25% profit calculation :

Profit made on article = 25% of X

Selling Price at 25% profit = X + 25% of X

                                           =X + (25X)/100

                                           = (100+25)X/100

                                           = 125X/100

                                           = (125*480)/100

                                           = 60000 / 100

                                            = 600

Hence, selling the article at Rs.600, double the profit i.e. 25% will be generated.
