Take three iron nails and clean them
rubbing with sand paper,
Take two test tubes marked as (A) and
(B). In each test tube, take about 10 ml
copper sulphate solution,
Tie two iron nails with a thread and
immerse them carefully in the copper
sulphate solution in test tube B for
about 20 minutes (Fig. 1.8 (a)]. Keep one
iron nail aside for comparison.
After 20 minutes, take out the fron nails
from the copper sulphate solution,
Compare the intensity of the blue colour
of copper sulphate solutions in test tubes
(A) and (B) (Fig. 1.8 (b)],
Also, compare the colour of the fron nails
dipped in the copper sulphate solution
with the one kept aside (Fig. 1.8 (b)l.

Answer:

Aim of the Activity :-

To test whether the solution of water and quick lime is acidic or basic .

Materials RequireD :-

A beaker , quick lime , water , a dropper and litmus solution .

Procedure :-

Take a beaker and pour water in it.

Carefully take a small amount of quick lime ( CaO ) and add to it.

Stir them carefully .

Allow the solution to rest for some time .

Now with the help of a dropper add the litmus solution ( red) to it.

Observations :-

Quick lime reacts vigoursly with water to form Calcium Hydroxide .

The reaction involves release of heat energy .

After the addition of litmus solution , the red color of litmus changes to blue .

The Reaction of water and quick lime is ,

\boxed{\red{\sf CaO + H_2O \to Ca(OH)_2 }}

CaO+H

2

O→Ca(OH)

2

Inference :-

The Calcium Hydroxide is basic in nature as it converts red litmus Solution to blue .
