How do machines decrease the amount of force needed to accomplish work? Machines apply force over a greater distance, so less force is needed. < 1 - reduces output force and increases the distance the object moves. ... Because some of the input work is always used to overcome friction in moving parts.

work done = F × s
suppose F = 10 and s = 5
Using machine,
work done = f × S
suppose f = 5 and S = 10
In both the cases work doen is same but the value of f os different.
