An Original Story

In the background I could hear a shrill cry of an infant and the loud barking of dogs .. I was in the train which would take me to Shimla. The train had stopped at a railway station. I saw a woman jump into the train carrying an infant. She shooed away the dogs which were chasing her. I saw that she was tired and offered her my bottle of water. She was so scared that she was trembling. I thought that the dogs had frightened her and the baby very much and took pity on them. I tried to comfort her by saying that it was the common nature of stray dogs to chase and bark at anyone they liked and that it was a blessing that the baby was safe. I offered her the vacant seat next to me. Now as the train had gained speed the baby cried more loudly. I gave her a biscuit from the packet i carried which she ate without even mumbling a thank you. I thought it was rather strange. It was then i noticed the bag that she had to which she held on very tightly. "Poor lady ", I thought, " Must be travelling for the first time in a train with her child to feel so uncomfortable ". As the train reached the next station i noticed that she became distinctly uneasy. I tried to have a little chat with her when in the blink of an eye, she thrust the baby and the bag onto me and ran off. I was thunder-struck. Just then a hand fell over my shoulder and i turned around shocked to be facing a stern policeman. There was a group of them out of which one snatched the bag from me and another , took the baby who was still crying, from my hands. The bag was opened and to my horror i saw that it was full of gold.I was handcuffed and was given several glances of disgust by the people in the compartment. The train stopped as someone had pulled the chain. It was then that everything was clear to me. The woman , as I thought was not at all innocent or poor as she looked but was really a thief and a kidnapper. She had probably stolen the gold from a rich man and had also kidnapped his child to bargain for more money. The police meanwhile had dragged me out of the train. I tried to explain everything to them but as i began I was beaten hard by one of them. I suddenly woke up and saw to my amazement and relief that it was all a dream. I had been sleeping all my way and now the train had reached Shimla station. I got out of the train and walked along the railway station, my mind full of the dream i had just seen. Then i vowed to never judge a person by this appearance.
