The question is:

By using the 20 percent off coupon that she found in the newspaper, Jill saved $4 on the extra large bag of dog food that she bought. what was the cost of the dog food without the coupon?

Given:

(i) By using the 20% off coupon that she found in the newspaper, Jill saved $4.

To find:

(i)  The cost of the food without coupon.

Solution:

Let the original price (without coupon) be x.

After a 4% discount, the selling price of the food becomes

= (100-Disc.)% of Original Price

= 80% of x

= $ 0.8x

Money saved  = $(Original price - Price after discount)

= $(x-0.8x)

= $0.2x

This is equal to 4$

So, 0.2x = 4

⇒ x = 4/0.2

= 20

Thus, the original price of the food without coupon is $20
