To find : greatest number by which each number must be divided, so that remainder in each case will be less than the divisor by 3

Solution:

Let say greatest Number  = N

162  =   AN  + (N - 3)  => 165 = A(N + 1)

382 =  BN  + (N - 3)  => 385 = B(N + 1)

877 = CN   + (N - 3)  => 880 = C(N + 1)

=> N + 1 is the HCF  of  

165 , 385 , 880

165 =  5 * 31

385 = 5 * 7 * 11

880 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 5 * 11

HCF = 5

5 is the greatest  number by 162, 382 and 877 must be divided, so that remainder in each case will be (5 - 3)  = 2

5 is the greatest  number
