# We all might have wondered how do scientists know when dinosaurs died and who's skeleton is this? This the wonder of rocks. These scientists calculate and estimate the approximate age of the rocks, so that they can find the age of a substance.

# There are two methods to find the age of rocks. They are:

⇒ Relative age dating

⇒ Absolute age dating.

Relative age dating is like saying, my mom is elder than me and absolute age dating refers like you are 13 years old and your mother is 36 years old.

→ Relative age:

# Relative age is the age of rock that is determined after the comparison of two rocks. It is not always an exact one.

⇒ There are many methods to find relative age:

# Rule of Superposition - Geologists assume that, unless something happens, in sedimentary rock layers, newer rock lie above old rocks. Some times, you have to look out for intrusions, ie when igneous rock is forced inside sedimentary rocks.

# Index fossils is other important method. It has lived for short period of time, in many places. Thus, we can find the time and helps in dating when the rock was formed.

→ Absolute age dating:

# It is the absolute way in which we can know exactly how old the rock is.

⇒ There are many methods to find absolute age:

# Radioactive dating is one of the most common methods. The age is determined by comparing the radioactive material with the amount of the decay product.

# Radioactive decay is another method. unstable atoms often loose energy as they get older with a constant rate that is measurable. Thus, the exact age can be determined.
