Given:

number must the given number be multiplied to increase the no by 20 percent

Find:

What number multiplied to increase the no by 20 percent =?

Solution:

Let the number be x

It is increased by 20%

  • According to question we have
  • New number = x + (x \times 20\%)

=>  we know that to find 20%, we need to divided 20 by 100

  • New number = x+ (x\times\frac{20}{100} )

                               = x + \frac{x}{5}

                               = \frac{5x + x}{5}

                               =\frac{6x}{5}

So the new number is \frac{6}{5}

Hence the  \frac{6}{5}  must the given number be multiplied to increase the no by 20 percent

A number must be multiplied with 6/5 or 1.2 to increase the number by 20%

Given:

  • A number increased by 20 %

To Find:

  • By what number , it should be multiplied

Solution:

Step 1:

Assume that number is x

Step 2:

Assume that number is multiplied by y so that number is increased by 20%

Step 3:

Multiply x and y to get new number

xy

Step 4:

Add 20% of x in x to get new number

x + (20/100)x

= x + x/5

= 6x/5

Step 5:

Equate the numbers

xy = 6x/5

Step 6:

Cancel x from both sides

y = 6/5

y = 1.2

Hence, A number must be multiplied with 6/5 or 1.2  to increase the number by 20%
