The other name of black soil is regur soil or black cotton soil.

Since it is formed by denudation of volcanic rocks, it is also known as lava soil.

Four features of black soil:-

• It is black in colour as it is formed from weathered labs rocks.

• It is fine textured and clayey in nature and, therefore, highly retentive of water.

• It has high quantities of lime, iron, magnesium and generally poor percentage of phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter.

• It is very fertile in most of the places. It is suitable for cultivation of cotton, jowar, wheat, sugarcane, etc.

• During the dry season, it shrinks and develops both cracks which help in aur circulation. This characteristic causes a kind of 'self-ploughing'.
