The goal of the game was to accumulating scores by throwing six sticks and moving the game pieces around the points of the square board according to the result. The sticks were hence an early form of dice in race games. The game was played by Han people in many occasions, as shown by numerous excavated relics such as the one below. The game eventually declined in popularity during Jin Dynasty and was replaced by the board game Go.
There were numerous variations of Liubo (one of the most famous being Gewu), though their rules were mostly lost in records.
