Answer:

Artificial silk also called rayon is formed from cellulose obtained from cotton or wood pulp . The cellulose is dissolved in a substance called alkaline carbon disulphide to make a thick liquid. This is squirted through tiny holes into a bath of acid. It reforms as fibre which can be spun into yarn.

The reason why artificial silk is more popular than real silk are :

  • Artificial silk is cheaper that natural silk.
  • It can be dyed in a variety of color.

Artificial silk (Rayon) is formed from cellulose which is obtained from wood pulp, this cellulose is then dissolved in a substance called alkaline carbon disulphide to make a thick liquid. It is then squirted into a pool of acid, this creates a fibre exactly like silk.

Artificial silk (Rayon) has become more popular than natural silk because

1. It is less expensive than silk.

2. It absorbs moisture and is comfortable to wear.

3. It blends well with other fibres, particularly woven ones

4. It can be easily dyed to produce beautiful and vivid colours.
