Indian Mutiny, also called SepoyMutiny, widespread but unsuccessfulrebellion against British rule in India in1857–58. Begun in Meerut by Indian troops (sepoys) in the service of the British East India Company, it spread to Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow.
