age of father after 3 yrs = x + 3

age of son after 3 yrs = y + 3

x + 3 = 3(y + 3)

x + 3 = 3y + 9

x - 3y = 6 equ (2)

subtract (2) from (1)

x - 6y - x + 3y = -36 - 6

-3y = -42

y = 42/3 = 14

substitute y = 14 in equation (2)

x - 3y = 6

x - 3(14) = 6

x - 42 = 6

x = 6 + 42

x = 48

therefore father's present age = 48

son's present age = 14
