When sodium hydroxide solution is added drop by drop to zinc sulphate solution, initially a white precipitate of Zn(OH)2 is formed which is soluble when excess of sodium hydroxide is added due to formation of Na2ZnO2

The reactions are as follows:

ZnSO4 + 2NaOH → Zn(OH)2 + Na2SO4

Zn(OH)2 + 2NaOH → Na2ZnO2 + 2H2O.
