Introduction
All living organisms get their energy mainly from food. We get food from plants and animals. The science
that deals with the cultivation of plants and raising livestock for human use is called agriculture.
Agriculture is the world's largest and most important industry and there have been tremendous advancement
in agriculture during the last century, such as development of new varieties of plants and animals, use of
fertilisers for better produce, use of pesticides for protection of crops and use of machines such as tractors
and harvesters which save labour and time. This has led to better quality and higher yields of crops. In
India, this agricultural revolution (or green revolution) began in 1960. As a result, production of food
grains has increased several fold.
Agriculture can be broadly classified into:
Agronomy: Study and development of techniques for improving agricultural practices
Horticulture : Cultivation of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants
Animal husbandry: Rearing and management of domesticated animals
