C. Answer these questions :

1. Describe the shoemaker in your own words.

→ The shoemaker looked weak, whitered and pale. He had a hollow face with bright eyes and dark eyebrows. His beard was grey and his face was extremely thin.

2. List the words from paragraphs 1 and 2 that indicate that the shoemaker had been in captivity for many years.

→ His body looked 'whitered and worn'. He had 'stayed in seclusion from direct sunlight'. These words prove that the shoemaker had been kept in prison for a long time.

3. How do we know that the old man's health and appearance had been neglected for a long time?

→ We know that the shoemaker had been neglected because he wore ragged clothes, looked worn and whitered and he had became unused to direct sunlight.

4. How did Defarge get the prisoner to speak?

→ Defarge got the prisoner to speak by constantly evolving memories and getting his acquaintance to meet him further, he constantly conversed with him so that he could react and answer.

5. Why wasn't the girl afraid of the shoemaker?

→ The girl was not afraid of the shoemaker because she knew him from before and therefore knew that he was not harmful.

6. What could be the relationship between the young lady and the shoemaker? Did he recognize her?

→ The young lady was perhaps the shoemaker’s daughter. The fact that the shoemaker didn’t react adversely on seeing her meant that he had recognized her.

The Shoemaker by Charles Dickens depicts the narrative of an imprisoned shoemaker who has lost his struggle with time and the manner in which he is reunited with his daughter.

Explanation:

Question 1 : Describe the shoemaker in your own words.

Answer: The shoemaker lacked strength, looked pale and white, and had a weak expression. His face was hollow, with bright eyes, dark eyebrows, and a pale complexion. His grey beard and thin face combined to give him a rather unattractive look.

Question 2 : List the words from paragraphs 1 and 2 that indicate that the shoemaker had been in captivity for many years.

Answer: A whiter and worn-out appearance was evident on his body. The shoemaker had “stayed in seclusion from direct sunlight”. As it is evident by these words that he had remained out of direct sunlight and kept in prison for a long time.

Question 3 : How do we know that the old man's health and appearance had been neglected for a long time?

Answer: The shoemaker's clothes were ragged, he looked worn and beardless, and he wasn't used to direct sunlight because he had been neglected.

Question 4 : How did Defarge get the prisoner to speak?

Answer: As Defarge kept evolving memories and get his acquaintance to get to know him further, he engaged him in constant conversations so that he could react and respond.

Question 5 : Why wasn't the girl afraid of the shoemaker?

Answer: She did not fear the shoemaker because she knew him from before and was therefore certain that he wouldn't harm her.

Question 6 : What could be the relationship between the young lady and the shoemaker? Did he recognize her?

Answer: The young lady might be the shoemaker's daughter. When the shoemaker saw her, he didn't react negatively, which meant that he recognized her.
