It was ninth grade honours English, and we had finished Oedipus Rex. The agenda on the board said “discuss final” I assumed the teacher meant the final test/essay. I was wrong.
“Okay, everybody. I thought this time instead of doing our typical essay and test bit, we’d change it up and do a project of your choice. A PowerPoint, speech, anything.”
My hand shoots up. “Anything?”
“Anything at all,” my teacher says. “Be creative.”
“Can we do this in a group?” I ask.
She gives me the approval and I look to my friend Jay knowingly. Jay nods back in return.
Some planning and parent phone calls later and Jay shows up at my house. We head to my room and get started.
I write a script.
Jay looks for good candidates for the parts.
I make costumes.
And together, we carefully and tastefully re-enact the play with my old toys. We interject our twisted sense of humour, and often ad lib lines and just really ham it up with impressions. In final scenes I tie a sort of noose with a thin belt and fit it around the barbie doll plying Jocasta and lift her in the air. On camera, I give her a little swing for dramatic flair as my friend gives a deep “NOOOOOOooooo”
It fades to black, then to our written explanation, and then we talk to the camera about Oedipus’ failures in the play.
The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the video cleanly edited around our bloopers and getting the video off of my outdated iPod we used as a camera and onto my school drive. We showed it to my class, and it was a hit. There were a few complaints about special effects or lack thereof. These kids wanted blood.
I learned my sophomore year that she shows the video to the ninth graders when they finish Oedipus. It’s probably the proudest moment of my acedemic career up to now.
