In maize flower the anthers are loosely connected to the filaments and can be moved by slightest blow of wind. This makes the pollen blow away easily.
These pollen grain may easily land on the feathery stigma coming out of the petals of another female flower as it has a large surface.
Self pollination is not possible as male flowers mature earlier than the female flowers.
