Displacement Reaction:

In which one element displaces another element from it's compound.

AB + C → AC + B

  • It's a slow reaction.

Example: Cl2 (aq) + 2NaBr (aq) → 2NaCl (aq) + Br2 (aq)

Cu (s) + 2AgNo3 (aq) → 2Ag (s) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq)

Double Decomposition Reaction:

In which exchange of ions takes place.

AB + CD → CB + AD

  • It's a fast reaction.

Example: AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) → AgCl (s) + NaNO3 (aq)

BaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) → BaSO4 (s) + 2 NaCl (aq)
