Arteries posses thicker mascular walls because they are under much more pressure than the veins. The heart pumps blood directly into the arteries which means it has high pressure. Hence it does not need valves to control the flow of blood, on the other hands, veins have very less pressure in them because blood isn’t directly pumped into them, so they require valves to stop the blood from flowing to opposite direction.
