we apply the division lemma to 14 and 6 to get

since the remainder is not equal to zero

we apply the division lemma to 6 and 2 and 6>2 to get

at this stage the remainder is zero

therefore the divisor at this stage will be the HCF

so the HCF of 6 and 14 is 2
