  1. We first meet Ariel in Act 1 Scene 2. Here he has just reminded Prospero of his promise to set his servant free. Prospero is angry and reminds Ariel of his former entrapment in a tree.
  2. Ariel is bound to serve the magician Prospero, who rescued him from the tree in which he was imprisoned by Sycorax, the witch who previously inhabited the island. Prospero greets disobedience with a reminder that he saved Ariel from Sycorax's spell, and with promises to grant Ariel his freedom
  3. Sycorax was a wicked witch who was banished from Algiers and was brought to the island. As Ariel being a delicate spirit refused to carry out her hateful commands, she imprisoned him in an open pine tree. He languished there with pain for twelve years.
  4. Prospero has higher regards towrads Ariel because he knows Ariel can perform and carry out the actions Prospero demands yet he threatens to return Ariel from the suffereing he had come from if he does not fullfill his duties. Ariel is the more submissive of the two servants to serve his master.
