5(x - 2) - 2(x + 1) = 3

⇒ 5x - 10 - 2x - 2 = 3

⇒ 3x - 12 = 3

⇒ x - 4 = 1

⇒ x = 1 + 4 = 5.

{Verification:-

LHS:-

5(x - 2) - 2(x + 1)

= 5(5 - 2) - 2(5 + 1)

= 15 - 12

= 3 = RHS.}
