Given  : x takes 2 1/2 hours more than that taken by y to cover a certain distance .if x doubles his speed ,he can cover the same distance in 1 1/2 hours less than that taken by y for the same distance

To Find : how much time (in hours ) does y require to cover the two third of the same distance

Solution:

Distance = Speed * Time

Let say Distance is  D    km

and Y take time   T   hr

X takes  Time  =  T + 5/2   = (2T + 5)/2  hr

Speed of X  = D/(2T + 5)/2 = 2D/(2T + 5)  km/hr

x doubles his speed , => 2 * 2D/(2T + 5)  = 4D/(2T + 5)  km/hr

Time taken = D/ 4D/(2T + 5)   = (2T + 5)/4  hrs

(2T + 5)/4  = T - 3/2

=> 2T  + 5 = 4T  - 6

=> 2T = 11

=> T = 11/2  hrs

Y covers the distance in 11/2 Hrs

2/3 Distance will be covered in (2/3) (11/2) =  11/3 hrs
