the Game. Film critics at that time failed to grasp that it was an amazing exception
among films made for commercial release. One reason for this lack of proper
evaluation could be that the film was screened only for a short while.
The first noticeable thing in Rules of the Game is that it has no single central character.
It does not have a plot, but the story does move to a conclusion. What Renoir had

is necessary to use a large number of lights. No one used to do it, because it had been
unanimously accepted that it was the foreground that was of primary interest, and the
background was secondary. Renoir was the first to use extra lights and maintain an
equal focus on both. Today, such a technique is known as deep focus.
Three years after Rules of The Game, a new film appeared in America. It was Citizen
Kane, directed by Orson Welles. Like Jean Renoir, it showed a huge deviation from
the established norms of film making. It has a central character: a typical American, a
tycoon. Usually Americans harbour a feeling of reverence towards such characters.
Orson Welles tried to expose the real nature of such a character and forced the public
to open its eyes to the truth.
Until that moment, every director in Hollywood had accepted as gospel truth that the
audience should not be taxed too much. Welles struck a blow at these beliefs, without
