What are the main features of the Mughal school of miniature paintings?
Mughal paintings are a blend of Indian, Persian and Islamic styles.
Mughal miniature paintings were brought as an offshoot of manuscript painting to India as Humayun brought with himself two great Persian artists, Mir Sayid Ali and Abdus Samad with his return to India post the defeat in the Battle of Kannauj at the hands of Sher Shah Suri, which had forced him to flee to Persia.
Mughal painting developed and flourished in the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
Features of Mughal miniature paintings-
Persian influence, which put great emphasis on realistic portraiture of scenes.
No religious themes. Themes were mostly taken from royal courts, nature etc. Hence, secular paintings.
Glorified Mughal rulers- themes also included hunting scenes, historical events etc.
Used muted colours.
Practiced as royal art and not by folks unlike Rajput school.
