For most of us during this lockdown period, our work has not stopped, in fact it may feel like the workload has almost doubled!  Add to that the homeschooling and managing of children if you’re a parent and things can get pretty messy!

Hopefully you have the time to read this mail, and if you do, please feel good about it, because it’s about MAKING time to do things, not always having time to do them, that will determine our success.

There is a famous article written by Paul Graham entitled “Makers Schedule, Manager’s schedule”.  Paul highlights that we can be categorized into two types of people when it comes to work approach, and therefore should firstly know which type of personality we are, and secondly apply the best tools to optimize our work to suit this persona (Maker or Manager).

For example, he suggests that the Maker, the more creative type, requires longer blocks of time in which they are uninterrupted and can work more fluently.  A meeting or too many things to do in a day will totally throw them off course. The Manager, Paul suggests is more for the leader type, who’s day is best divided up into blocks of time with meetings, task delegation and multitasking.  Given too much time at once and their ability to function becomes distracted.

Now of course, in today’s world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to allow yourself to just be one or the other.  Multitasking for example, which is strongly discouraged by time management specialists, sometimes or most often is a necessity or what we find ourselves doing just because of perhaps societal pressures.  So it is not uncommon to feel that you are a bit of both. You are a maker some days and a manager on others.  Or both in one day.

The key is to get to know how you work best, and apportion your day accordingly. So todays mail serves to highlight my Top Ten Tips, on how to time manage during this lockdown period. In applying these tips I hope that you can learn how you operate better.  Hopefully you become so good at it that you can apply it to your work situation when life goes “back to normal”.

Set your alarm…. get up at the same time each day, as if you were still going to work.

Get up, get changed, and make the bed.  Somehow that already adds order to the day.

Make your “To Do” list!

Prioritize this list and ensure you know what tasks need to be tackled first.

Be intentional with everything that you do.  don’t faff, or doodle, or second guess yourself.

Set yourself deadlines for the tasks you’ve now worked out, and be realistic about these deadlines so that you keep your stress levels somewhat at bay.

Try your best to not multitask all the time. Some tasks can allow for it, some don’t.

Exercise!! You can’t sit all day just because you feel you need to work.  You need to move, to assist your body’s ability to concentrate better.  Take breaks, move.

Ensure you are choosing the right times to do the right tasks – for example if you need to write an important essay or put together an important document, do this early in the day straight after your first coffee, or at night when the kids are asleep and the world is quiet.

Meditate – meditation comes in many forms and does not necessarily require you to sit with your legs crossed, fingers pinched whilst humming.  It can be sitting at your desk, closing your eyes for 2 minutes and practicing deep breathing, trying to clear your mind.

I hope that these tips have helped!
