Explanation:

a. The physical balance or called as the beam balance was the first instrument which is used to measure the solid mass. It contains a pivoted horizontal lever having the same lengths of the arms. This is called as beam. It has two pans in which the standard weights and the solid substance is to be placed. The unknown mass is placed in the right pan and the standard pans are placed in the left pan, generally. We want to balance the beam so that the beam is completely horizontal. Now calculate the total mass of the standard weights and find out the mass of the unknown substance.

b.A thermometer is an instrument that measures temperature. It can measure the temperature of a solid such as food, a liquid such as water, or a gas such as air. The three most common units of measurement for temperature are Celsius, Fahrenheit, and kelvin.

Answer:

. The physical balance consists of a light and rigid beam of brass, a metallic pillar, a wooden base, two pans, a metallic pointer, and an ivory scale. The device is enclosed in a box to avoid the effect of wind. A weight box containing standard weights comes with the balance. A physical balance (or beam balance) works on the principle of moments. According to the principle of moments, in equilibrium, sum of anticlockwise moments = sum of clockwise moments.

A thermometer is a device used for measuring temperature. This ice-covered thermometer shows that the temperature is about 0 degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Types of thermometer

Digital thermometers. Digital thermometers are quick to use, reasonably accurate and can be used under the armpit (always use the thermometer under the armpit with children under 5). ...

Ear (or tympanic) thermometers. ...

Infared thermometers. ...

Strip-type thermometers. ...

Mercury thermometers.

The recommended practical system of units of measurement is the International System of Units (Système International d'Unités), with the international abbreviation SI. The SI is defined by the SI Brochure, which is published by the BIPM. the current version of the SI was completed by adding the mole as base unit for amount of substance, bringing the total number of base units to seven.
