and,

so putting back the value :

( - 3) ^{3}  + ( - 3)^{2}  + ( - 3) + 5 \\  \\  =  - 27 + 9 - 3 + 5 \\  \\  =  - 27 - 3 + 9 + 5 \\  \\  =  - 30 + 14 \\  \\  = -  16
