Grignard reagents are formed by the reaction of magnesium metal with alkyl or alkenyl halides. They're extremely good nucleophiles, reacting with electrophiles such as carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones, esters, carbon dioxide, etc) and epoxides.
